WANTED: Fleece Donations For Project Warmup

Fleece Donations for Project Warmup @ Wings

Wings is collecting fleece donations for Project Warm Up at November Long!

During the month of November we will be collecting fleece donations for our Parent’s Night out in December when we will be making Tie-Blankets to donate to Project Warm Up.

Project Warm-Up distributes blankets to children and families in need – children face poverty, homelessness, death of a parent, placement in foster care, those facing a serious illness and some are new to our country (and South Dakota winters). We know a simple blanket can’t fix their situation, but hopefully it will provide them some warmth and comfort while dealing with what life is currently offering them.

Donation Information:

The blankets are made out of two equal sized (2 yards) pieces of fleece – usually one solid and one patterned. Donations can be left in the collection buckets at either gym. To learn more about Project Warm up visit: projectwarmup.org

Meet The Staff

We are going to spend the next few blog posts introducing you to our staff here at Wings. I will start by introducing myself and my family.

My name is Alicia Reiners and I own Wings Gymnastics Academy and Wings-West. I grew up all over the midwest but I claim Mankato, MN as my hometown. I moved to Sioux Falls my senior year of High School and attended USD for college. I graduated with a Degree in Electronic Media and Television Production. I met my husband Matt at USD. Matt works for Raven and is my Mr. Fix it at the gym. We have been married 19 years and have 5 kids . Austin (18), Wyatt (16), Izzy (14), Harper (7), AND Chase (5). They all attend Harrisburg schools.  We also have a black lab puppy named Luna.
I LOVE gymnastics. I was a multi-sport athlete my whole life. It is one of the reason’s I have such a passion for High School Gymnastics. I played soccer, and was a diver for our swim team in the fall, a gymnast in the winter, and pole vaulter and sprinter for our track team in the spring.  I trained all of those sports in the summer. Gymnastics was always my favorite and came the easiest to me.
I coached on and of all throughout high school and college but have been coaching consistently for 18 years.
I coached at Siouxland Gymnastics and the “Superstar Tumble Bus” in Sioux City when Matt and I were first married, and I was staying home with my kids.
We moved to Omaha, NE and I was blessed to work for an amazing gym, Metro Stars Gymnastics, that was new and growing quickly. I was able to help build that program, and started a tumble bus program for them.

In Oct 2010 we had the opportunity to move back to Sioux Falls. With that was my decision to start my own gym, and I opened Wings in August of 2011. Wings started in a 1500 sq foot strip mall in 2011. Ten years later, we own our own building, and are adding a second location in Lake Lorraine!
Although I mostly deal with the  day to day operations at this point in time you will see me sneak into the gym to coach different groups.I love coaching every age but I really enjoy coaching middle school and high school ages. This has me coaching with Harrisburg High School as their assistant coach this year.  I really believe in the positive impact a coach has on a young adult, and I take that very seriously.
My three oldest kids also work at Wings and my younger two think they do.   Austin has been coaching for 6 years and coaches in our Lil’ Wings Program. He has a gift for working with the littles and no matter how hard we try we can’t pry him from the little gym. Austin plays Varsity Hockey and loves to Weld. He hopes to own his own welding business someday.
Wyatt works in our Camp/Care & Events Department. He LOVES to joke around and play which makes him a blast to have as a teacher in these areas. You are likely to catch him right in the middle of any game our kids are playing. In his free time Wyatt plays hockey. He is also a great singer and is involved in multiple choirs at school.   Izzy has been in gymnastics all of her 14 years. She is currently competing as a level 9 on our Competitive team.  She  been coaching for 2 years. She coaches in our Advanced and Team Program when she is not working out herself! In her free time Izzy like to sing, play the piano and guitar, and draw.
Harper competes for our Xcel Gold Competitive team. You will also find Harper “working” in the little gym. She is our go to when we have a new kiddo that is shy and nervous about going in the gym. Harper will help them by being their buddy, and helping them with class until they are comfortable. Chase is our resident crazy man. You will find him bouncing all over the gym at night. He likes to think of himself as a team coach as is usually found “helping” the team kids get motivated.

Cartwheels Are Fun

What is a cartwheel?

A cartwheel is a basic skill in gymnastics that every young gymnast dreams of having! The gymnast will start in a stance with one leg in front and one leg behind them, this stance is called a “lunge”.  From there they turn their hands sideways and kick their feet over their head to the other side of their body. The gymnast then lands back in their “lunge” shape that they began in. One caveat, the lunge they end in will have their opposite foot in front than the lunge they started in.

How do we work cartwheels in class?

In a beginner class we focus on drilling the portions of the cartwheel in addition to the cartwheel as a whole. We will take the lunge shape we mentioned earlier and make sure the gymnast has a strong lunge stance to help support the cartwheel. We focus on the upside down portion of the cartwheel to make sure the gymnast has strong arms and bellies so they don’t crumble onto their head or fall over when attempting the cartwheel. The cartwheel can be a difficult skill to master and can vary from each child. Some children pick up on the cartwheel after a few times of trying while others will work on this skill for months before achieving a cartwheel. The cartwheel is a basic gymnastics skill that does transition into “big” tumbling skills later on such as round-offs and aerials, which is why we want to make sure each gymnasts achieve a solid cartwheel from the beginning.

When Should My Child Start Gymnastics?

The sooner the better! Not because you need to start young to be an amazing gymnast. Only because gymnastics is an amazing sport for the body and for your brain too!  The reason gymnastics is such a great sport is because it is a motor-sensory sport. The sport helps develop not only great motor skills that can follow your child into every sport they play, but it also helps the brain develop!

Sensory motor skills (also known as sensorimotor skills) are those we use to take in information about the world through our senses and to develop our body’s movement, or motor, response to that information (if we need to jump out of the way of a speeding tricycle that we see headed our way, for instance). We take in information about the world through our systems of vision, hearing, smell, taste, touch, balance and spatial orientation (called the vestibular system), and proprioception (position, motion, and equilibrium). https://ctspediatrics.com/treatment-areas/occupational-therapy/sensory-motor-disorders/

The younger kids are able to begin in a sport like gymnastics the better their motor sensory skills will be! At Wings kids can start class as soon as they are walking.

Oh Yes She Did!

When Coach Teske talks, ears peak up to listen! In fact, most everyone wants to hear what she has to say. Generally, it will be one of four things; constructive criticism, words of encouragement, singing songs of praise or simply yelling “atta-girl” from across the gym!!!  Yes, Coach Teske provides all the right stuff that everyone wants to hear. On top of her personable skills, she is a phenomenal coach with an over arching ability to build trust with every gymnast she encounters. Her level of commitment goes above and beyond perfecting skills and drills, and right to becoming a better person from the inside out. Coach Teske recognizes all the moments as they happen that help build and shape an individuals character.

With that, I introduce you to the Gymnast(s) of the Meet, Watertown Sweetheart Spectacular February 19-21, 2021!

Silver:

Jayde Kludt

  • She did an amazing job being brave enough to be the first routine on floor of the whole meet weekend! Along with not having her other silver mates along side her. Jayde was very supportive of the other girls in her rotation and really showed what a great teammate she is!

Gold:

Khloe Johnsen

  • She came to Watertown ready to take care of business! Khloe did her first round off back handspring by herself at this meet without even a hesitation!! She killed it on absolutely everything. Great work Khloe!

Platinum:

Allie Myhre

  • Allie did a stellar job at the Watertown meet! Even though it wasn’t her best meet of the year she held it together for her team and was super supportive as well! She showed a great example of how to work hard the entire time!

Optionals:

Izzy Reiners

  • For flipping her first vault in competition! She had a rough time at warm-ups and even though she was struggling she didn’t let it get her down ONE BIT! She killed it in competition and stuck her first vault! She did such a great job!

Way to go girls, Coach Teske is so proud of you!!!
